Asl: Going Deaf for a Day Essay
Going deaf was a different experience for me. It was the most difficult challenge Iââ¬â¢ve ever done. It completely sucked that I couldnââ¬â¢t use most of my electronics. I couldnââ¬â¢t use my phone to call my mom but I was able to text her. I couldnââ¬â¢t listen to music which was the worst because I have to listen to music when Iââ¬â¢m working out, cooking or doing work for school. But being deaf wasnââ¬â¢t all that bad. One of the best things of being deaf was not listening to my mom complain! My mom couldnââ¬â¢t get mad me because she knew I couldnââ¬â¢t hear anything. It was also very peaceful around the house for me. I donââ¬â¢t have to listen to loud vehicles that come down my street, neighbors dog barking and my neighborââ¬â¢s loud spanish music. There some things that I did have to adjust to my daily life. I usually have to call my younger sister to tell her that the food is done or clean her room, but my sister never hears me so I have physically grab her attention. Instead I used a bell to call her or throw a ball at her to get her attention. Also I usually watch my anime shows but since I canââ¬â¢t hear anything, I watched it with subtitles without sound. People usually responded to me screaming at me but they forgot that was going death for a day. My mom had throw something at me to get my attention and my sister would grab me if she needed anything. Or they would write their questions on paper but most of the time I would read their lips There were few difficult things that I went through. When I have no internet, I couldnââ¬â¢t watch my anime or other shows. I had to put my phone on vibrate and always to have it with me. There wasnââ¬â¢t much difficulties besides these but everything else was easy. Iââ¬â¢m Khmer/Laotian and it was hard for me to understand my grandparents since they donââ¬â¢t speak english. I learned that without hearing, itââ¬â¢s hard to communicate with other people and family. Without language, itââ¬â¢s hard to understand somebodyââ¬â¢s culture. ââ¬Ë

AP Essay: Maria W. Stewart Essay
The Great Missippi In the passage ââ¬Å"Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927â⬠the author John M. Barry describes elaborately the functions and complexity of the Mississippi River. The author wants to inform the reader about the fascinating characteristic the Mississippi River offers, through a descriptive and informative passage. The authorââ¬â¢s fascination of the river is incredible due to the simple, solid facts that are stated. Throughout the passage the author uses many rhetorical devices to amplify his message such as diction, vivid imagery, and simile. The author uses a series of rhetorical devices in the passage such as asyndeton to help communicate his fascination of rivers to the reader. An example of this is ââ¬Å"It generates its own internal forces through its size, its sediment load, its depth, variations in its bottom, its ability to cave in the riverbank and slide sideways for miles, and even tidal influencesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (20-23). This example is very useful to our understanding of rivers because itââ¬â¢s very detailed and rich in in facts. Another rhetorical device the author uses in the passage is the usage of similes. A clear example of this is ââ¬Å"Rather, it moves south in layers and whorls, like an uncoiling rope made up of a multitude of discrete fibersâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (36-38). This is a very interesting example of a simile, simply because it compares two things with very descriptive words and because it gives the reader a more concrete understanding of the rivers strength. It also makes the reader become more engaged and interested to the passage. The last rhetorical device in the passage is the use of vivid imagery. The author uses this powerful device in the passage to amplify and captivate the reader. An example of this is ââ¬Å"Humphreys observed an eddy, running upstream at seven miles an hour and extending half across the river, whirling and foamingâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (47-49). This example helps the reader emphasize the rivers complexity and.

A Good Manager in the Face of Organizational Change Essay
Introduction Every business needs a good manager ââ¬â may it be a small family business or a large multinational corporation. There is no magic formula for being a good and effective manager ââ¬â it is a continuing process and becoming one entails knowledge, skills and ability. It is not just a title but also a role that has to be performed and performed well. It is a product of working with and being around all classes of people ââ¬â management team, clients, co-workers and others ââ¬â and emanating the lessons learned in order to be better. Changes in management team, changes in the companyââ¬â¢s directions, changes in priorities, even the simple changes of supervisors, transfer to other department, or the hiring of a new team member ââ¬â these are but some of the changes that a staff may have to deal with in the workplace. These are also the major factors that affect any employeeââ¬â¢s performance and confidence, which make apparent the need for a good and capable manager ââ¬â one that can help communicate and successfully enforce managementââ¬â¢s plans to the rest of the employees. As a manager, he should explain the reasons for the change and the processes involved. One possible consequence of any organizational change is the decrease in employeeââ¬â¢s morale and motivation, which could lead to a decrease in the employeeââ¬â¢s performance. This is but one of the many issues that a good manager has to handle. Discussion What is A Manager? A manager is the person who plans, leads and controls the activities of the organization. He balances the demands and requirements of the organization while at the same time, meets the employeesââ¬â¢ expectations. A manager works hard to achieve the goals of the company without disregarding employeesââ¬â¢ welfare. A manager is often seen as the liaison between the management and the workforce. Among the many responsibilities of a manager is dealing with employees and addressing their issues and concerns. Thus, a manager must also learn to acknowledge and admit employee concerns. These issues could be an employeeââ¬â¢s poor performance, sloppy work, negative work attitude or low confidence in the company. In other words, it is the managerââ¬â¢s role to assess and evaluate the employeeââ¬â¢s performance. Not only does a manager address employee concerns, he also ensures that the organizationââ¬â¢s goals and objectives are met. He plans, monitors and takes the lead towards the realization of business goals. à A manager delegates and coordinates work to his members, for which he must also be accountable. What Makes A Good Manager? Bill Gates recently wrote an article about the attributes of a good manager. One of the traits he mentioned is the need for a manager to be a good communicator. He must be able to convey managementââ¬â¢s plans and directions well and ensure that employees understand where the company hopes to be. Bill Gates also wrote that a good manager needs relationships, not only with the executives but most especially with his employees. He must encourage people to be open and give feedback about what they think about the business and the role the manager and the employees themselves play in it. With the varying requirements expected of a manager, it is therefore necessary for one to possess analytical skills, people skills and business skills for him to deliver and perform his functions well. It is also essential for a manager to be resourceful in finding appropriate courses of action to any problem that may arise. Not only do his people depend on him for guidance, management has also entrusted him with this responsibility. Aside from these, he must also be able to exemplify and act-out what he expects from his staff. A good manager sets and more importantly, lives up to the standards. Moreover, being the liaison between management and employees, it is imperative that a manager knows the needs of his people, and what keeps them satisfied and fulfilled in their jobs. Striving to maintain a healthy level of employee morale is no easy task but one that a manager must also focus on. A good manager then should also be approachable as the position may require mediating between management and the workforce. Building good camaraderie requires that a manager be patient and sincere in his efforts. A very stressful role ââ¬â thus having a good sense of humor never hurts. A good manager has the ability to develop employee skills and improve their morale. He must know how to motivate and obtain loyalty, which is necessary in todayââ¬â¢s ever-changing organizations. Organizational Change Heraclitus once said that nothing is permanent but change. This could not be truer in todayââ¬â¢s organizations especially with the rapid emergence of an international and global economy. Any organization must learn to thrive and be flexible to meet the ever-changing demands in order to survive. Change has become such an everyday occurrence and an integral part of any companyââ¬â¢s life; so much so that employees who are not receptive to such changes can weigh down managementââ¬â¢s efforts for growth. Numerous studies have been done on why people, most often than not, resist even the most well-conceived plans of change. Especially in an organization, resistance and skepticism are the most common employee reactions. The negative responses may be because of the possibility of loss, fear of the unknown and disruption of what has become a habit. One common reason of resistance to change is that an individual feels the possibility of a loss ââ¬â loss of something he values that may result from change. Most often, changes in an organization are structural ââ¬â they affect job status, lead to additional responsibilities and impose new reporting structures. Restructuring may also require physical relocation and in worse scenario, job termination. With all of these possibilities, imaginary or real they may be, it is but a natural instinct for an employee to reject change. Another reason for resisting change is fear. It is an inherent trait in humans to fear the unknown, the uncertain. Any uncertain situation is never welcome and an individual will avoid having to face such situations as much as possible. With any organizational change, an employee may fear that he may not be capable to meet the demands in the future. He resists because he feels that he does not have the competencies needed for him to function in the new structure. He becomes afraid thus, the negative response even to the most well-meaning plans of change. One other reason why people reject change is that they have become accustomed to and feel more comfortable with the current practice. It has become a force of habit. Many people think things are already fine and do not see the need for change or believe that it is the solution to whatever problem is at hand. Employees may also resist change because they have to learn something new. In many cases, people are reluctant to leave the familiar behind especially if it entails learning something new and presents the risks of failing. A Good Manager in the Face of Organizational Change At one point, I also had to face and deal with an organizational change. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company I was with decided to concentrate on his other affairs and relinquish his post. His successor, though no less brilliant, is in many ways very different on how things are done and how objectives are met. Their priorities and ways in achieving the companyââ¬â¢s vision were very much opposing. This move greatly affected our team since we report and were directly under the CEOââ¬â¢s office. Our team had to take on new responsibilities, transfer some functions to another team and report to a new management team ââ¬â changing almost everything our team has been used to. The recent movement in the companyââ¬â¢s management forced every member of the team to learn to adjust fast but still maintain the same level of efficiency and effectiveness. It is an understatement to say that everyone was on a very high stress level. Most were uncertain of their future and status in the company and wondered whether they will keep their job or would have to be laid-off. It was a very good thing that our manager knew how to handle those changes and helped made things easier to deal with. In the context of organizational change, in order to facilitate a smooth implementation, it is very important that a good manager anticipate and plan well his approach to the possibility of a negative reception. A good manager has to properly communicate the details of the change and make the employees see the need to do things differently. A good manager must inspire and challenge his team to embrace such changes, since a positive and supportive environment yields a more productive and a more committed workforce. Recognizing a staffââ¬â¢s contributions to the organization is fundamental and very important in inspiring employees. Keeping the employee motivated entails various skills, as there are various personalities involved. No one formula can ever be arrived at as to how to motivate employees especially in a dynamically- changing organization, but developing an honest and open relationship is a start. Giving regular, positive, and constructive criticism can also help create an encouraging environment and help boost an employeesââ¬â¢ sense of being valued. There are some companies that provide monetary rewards or incentives as a way of showing their appreciation to their personnel. However, this could be very costly and the rewards may quickly be forgotten. This is why this practice must be exercised prudently and must not be the only way of motivating employees. Financial incentives may seem to be the most notable form of motivation but may also cause disadvantages to the company in the long-term. Conclusion à à à à à à à à à à à The need for an efficient and effective manager is one issue that all organizations face. Managers not only play a vital part in the realization of the companyââ¬â¢s goals but also influence the employees, hence, becoming an even more critical part in the business. Every organization must change in order to improve and cope with increasing industry competition. However, whether the factors prompting such moves may be external or internal, every organization must be able to address any consequence that may arise. Needless to say, employees also play an equally vital role in any organization. Thus, in the context of organizational change, one of the most central, albeit complex consequences is the employeesââ¬â¢ response. Being the workforce that keeps the organization alive, it is very important for a good manager to acknowledge the employeesââ¬â¢ significance and value; and to show that they are an integral part of the company. Ultimately, any company has much to gain by empowering and recognizing the value of its members. This is why efforts must be taken by a good manager to foster loyalty and keep them motivated in the face of change. In conclusion, let us keep in mind the words of Charles Darwin ââ¬â ââ¬Å"It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.ââ¬

Research proposal and introduction and literature review Paper
Proposal and introduction and literature review - Research Paper Example The research will seek to know if politics has any influence on the political decisions of people. It will seek to identify if the media directs the public on what to think and what to do. The research will also investigate on whether the public opinions on political aspects are based on the informationà suppliedà to them by the media. Voting is one of the biggest political arenas that involve the public and in respect to that, the research will seek to know if the media decides where the public cast their vote during an election. In the past people have considered the media to be the source of political enmity and even have accused the media to be the cause of various political ethnic clashes. The research will seek to know if the media participates in creating political enmity between people of different ethnicities and races. To be able to dig out the above information and make viable conclusions, the research will use three different research methods. It will interview the selected participants using present research questions and record their feedback in order to know their opinions. The research will use questionnaires that will contain research questions. In order to gain valid information, it will include multiple answer questions and open-ended question so as not to limit the interviewee. The final research method will be observation. The researcher will observe the public reaction on prevailing political topics and the gauge the influence of the media on decisions and stands made by the public. The research will also use the available literature in books and journals to study the influence of the media on political behavior of the public According to Popkin, the media have a great influence on how voters make their choices during elections. He argues that the larger percentage of the society makes decisions on whom to vote for based on the media TV stations or

Reactive extrusion of TPE-E nanocomposites Case Study
Reactive extrusion of TPE-E nanocomposites - Case Study Example It is very difficult to do extrusion blending with TPEE because it has a low melt viscosity and tension. Its melt viscosity and tension can be increased by adding branching agent during polymerization. Even with this increase, it is not sufficient to perform extrusion blowing. There are several attempts, which have been made to increase melt viscosity and tension during extrusion by use of a chain extender during melt polymerization. Reduction of crystallization time through reactive extrusion of PBT with the use of diepoxy group as a chain extender provides a simpler method of getting high molecular weight of PBT than the conventional method of poly-condensation. Researchers acknowledge that multifunctional polymers such as TMP, TME and trimesic acid can be used to produce high molecular weight of PET. There is an effect of the modified m-MDI in the blending process of PET since the increase of m-MDI increases the molecular weight of PET. However the reaction should not be abled to continue for a long time and m-MDI should not be added because there will be crosslinking of the product because of the excessive reaction of isocyanate. This will later affect the ductility of the blend. In a situation where the correct amount of m-MDI is used then the molecular weight of PET is reduced with increasing time of blending. This is because of degradation hydrolytic and isocyanate group. It is very important to complete the process within a short time to avoid degradation. If the time is not enough to complete the process of forming urethane then there will be production of carbon dioxide by unreacted isocyanate groups at the stage of post extrusion. fluoromica pristine clay modified with alkyl-ammoniums (ODTMA) Moreover, the unreacted group of isocyanate might result into undesirable side reaction at the post processing stage (Brown & Alder, Pp 35). Hence, it is very important to ensure that the process is completed and the physical properties are maintained. The best processing parameters for blending m-MDI and TPEE must be found. The current thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPE) is characterized by qualities such as excellent heat resistance, resistant to light, heat-aging resistance, and good in block order retaining ability and low temperature traits. The TPE is made up of hard section, which consists of polyester, which comprises of aromatic dicarboxylic acid and aliphatic or alicyclic diol, and a soft section, which consists of aliphatic polycarbonate as the main ingredient. Through which where the hard and soft section becomes connected, and the melting points of the TPE are arrived at by taking their measurements using a differential scanning calorimeter in three stages. First temperature is raised from room temperature to 3000 C, at a 200 C/min heating rate, then for three minutes maintain temperatures at 3000 C after which lower it to room temperature at a cooling rate of 1000 C/min. (Tm1 ââ¬â Tm3) obtains the melting point differ ence (Brown, Alder, 65). Materials pTMEG, 1,4-BD, Irganox 1010 and modifies m-MDI, MM103C. In addition, poly (butylene terephthalate) was also used. In addition phenol, together with 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethane, CF3COOD and TBT were used without any purification. The inner viscosity of the polymer was determined by use ubbelohde viscometer at 35 degrees (Chang, Pp 54). Usually IV is

Frederick douglass Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Frederick douglass - Term Paper Example The African descendents were treated worse than farm animals which reduced them to relying on survival instincts, acting like animals. This ââ¬Ëcause an effectââ¬â¢ reality reinforced stereotypes that slaves were more similar to animals than humans. Frederick Douglass experienced all of these indignities as a slave yet rose to prominence in the country that subjugated him and his people. Douglass wrote of his early life as a slave and along with its dehumanizing effects on a person in addition to his life as a freed man in the autobiography Frederick Douglass: Life of an American Slave. In it he details the aspects of life in the era and the circumstances that inspired him to ââ¬Ëbecome a manââ¬â¢ instead of than remaining ââ¬Ëin characterââ¬â¢ as a slave. Frederick Douglass (1818 ââ¬â 1895) was born in Maryland and given the birth name Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. Douglass only saw his mother a few times before her death, when he was seven years-old. H e was raised by his grandparents and aunt. Although Maryland was commonly considered part of the Northern states, slaves were used, but not to the same extent as in the South. Slaves in Maryland were typically treated more humanely than in states below the Mason-Dixon Line. Still, ââ¬Å"Douglass witnessed many beatings during his first seven years and often was required to endure cold and hunger in his northern home.â⬠(People and Events, 2008). Douglass was working in Baltimore by age eight where he was employed as a shipââ¬â¢s carpenter and was taught to read and write. It was during these early years he became to understand that some people thought slavery to be immoral. At age 15 his likely father, a white man named Douglass Aaron Anthony, died. He was forced to return to farm work where he was sadistically beaten on a daily basis by known slave breaker Edward Covey. (People and Events, 2008). Douglass turned on Covey, assaulting him while escaping the farm. He returned to Baltimore but was still considered a slave, a runaway slave which was a serious offense at the time. Fortunately while in Baltimore a friend gave him his own identification papers which allowed Douglass to escape slavery for good in September 1838. (McElrath, 2008). Douglass moved to Massachusetts and married Anna Murray of Baltimore, a freed slave herself. The couple would have five children. Douglass began his anti-slavery campaign by speaking to abolitionist groups in 1841 relating the reality of slavery. In 1845 he started writing about the slave experience publishing Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave in addition to speaking to audiences around the world, encouraged by William Lloyd Garrison (McElrath, 2008). Following two years of travel abroad, Douglass returned to America in 1847. He immediately accepted a position as publisher of the North Star, a weekly newspaper in New York where he moved with his family. Douglass, a strong-willed and well- known activist for slavery abolition, directed his energies to recruiting black soldier to fight for the North during the Civil War. At this time he was also speaking out for womenââ¬â¢s rights in addition to freedom for blacks. Douglass has the honor of being the first black man to have an official title and position within the Federal Government. ââ¬Å"From 1877 to 1881, he was the U.S. Marshall of the District of Columbia, from 1881 to 1886 he
